Its been a while...

So its been a few months since I last posed on here. I had a crazy week getting a new job at the end of September then been working my bum off since! I now work as a supervisor for the amazing brand, Burberry and seeing where life takes me.
I am currently ill and stuck in bed for the third day running (also onto tissue box number 3!) so thought I would see how I can start this up again. Might take a few weeks to get something posted but here goes....

End of an era...

So I have finally come to the end of my university life...

Our final deadline was last Friday at 12:00 noon and since then I have worked and had the opportunity to visit London for Graduate Fashion Week. I have only been to London a few times so it was a great trip with some of the girls from Uni. There was a lot of talent being shown on the stands and in the shows. I had the chance to see the Gala show on Wednesday before we got the train home which topped the trip off.
Being a print designer I didn't benefit as much as the Fashion students but I got some great advice from a member of the George (ASDA) team which will help me progress with my work. He gave me some great compliments and made me think more about using my designs for art as well as fashion.

My degree will be marked over the next week and then it's time for the exhibition which is open Saturday 18th until Wednesday 22nd to the public (there is more info on the MMU website).
I miss working in the studio and really miss working alongside the other girls on my course but its onwards and (hopefully) upwards! Rianna has posted some photos of our last few days in the studio on her blog.

I am taking part in the Manchester Fashion Show on Wednesday 22nd at the Museum of Science and Industry where tickets can be bought for £8 via http://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Salford/Museum-Of-Science-And-Industry/Manchester-School-of-Art-graduate-fashion-show/11482778/
This will be the first time my garments/designs will have been on a catwalk so I am very excited and look forward to be showing alongside some of my friends.

Betafashion and ASOS: My shortlisted designs

The voting is open until Monday and they help the judges with their decision so any votes or comments would be appreciated. There is some stiff competition from some very talented designers so fingers crossed my designs stand out among a strong bunch!

I am so pleased to announce that 3 of my designs have been shortlisted by ASOS and are now up for public voting on betafashion. The website is great, it gives upcoming designers a place to show their work and get feedback from others and the prizes for the competitions are amazing too.
After such a stressful last few months (and more to come, thanks final year!!) I am so pleased something positive have come from my design work and hope others like my designs and want to see it produced by ASOS this summer as much as me!
The competition is 'freedom project' and the voting opens today 7/3/2011 and will close next Monday 14/3/2011 and will help the judges make their final decision.

Each persons name is with their design so look for my name Kate Kinsey and I have 3 designs in this competition which is really lucky.

I have been following FashionToast aka Rumi Neely, for a long while now and am never disappointed with the content of her blog. Rumi has amazing personal style and each outfit post is more like a magazine editorial. She always has a fantastic location to photograph her outfits in and has some beautiful photography of lanscapes and other interesting textures and objects she has found.

Another great thing about Rumi's blog is how much information she gives her readers about designers and their collections from high street to luxury designer brands.

ASOS brand inspiration

These are some images from ASOS.com which I have been looking at for my client research. I have decided to focus on two collections, one casual wear and one work wear and within this I will create a designer line and diffusion line ready for the high street.

I am not trying to be a fashion designer, I purely like to have an over view of what my work ends up as and find it fun to experiment.

I think my prints work well for a variety of styles and brand levels.

These ASOS images inspired my work wear for the high street collection. Obviously it depends on what job someone has but they are fun and girly but with an interesting edge.

ASOS have grown so much within the past few years they are building a huge client base and have such a variation of brands.

These are some prints I have been working on over Christmas. I have used my development work to put together some offset repeat print designs. Some are more successful than others but I think they will work well as oversized t-shirts and other casual wear but I also think they would look interesting as linings in suit jackets and youthful workwear.

I love the way prints bring so much colour and fun to an outfit, who said workwear had to be black everyday?!

These are some designs I have created using the inkblot pieces posted earlier on my blog. I could see some of these as jacket linings or colourful scarves. I think some work better than others and I really like how much colour there is. I don't think I am going to push these any further as it becomes too repetitive but I will test them out in some illustrations to see what happens and possibly get some digitally printed onto fabric.

These are some of my own designs inspired by the rorschach inkblot test. I was first interested in this when I made my marbeling ink designs and have finally got around to creating my own. I am going to experiment by adding some of my marbelling design into these and also play around with the scale to create some repeat print designs.

These are the inkblot cards that are used in the rorschach test. This is a psychological test which is analysed to discover mind disfunction's.

One of my classmates is looking into the mind and how people with mental issues view things differently. It's really interesting. I have decided to look at the actual shapes and patterns created by the inkblots.

These are some pieces I created in my A-Levels. I took inspiration from the building in Manchester, in particular the roofs (after going on the wheel). I used the shapes and created boards of patterns which i then cut up and put back together to form interesting shapes. I like the prints but I also like the boards as they have the textures on them which create the different finishes on the prints.

I HOPE… people enjoy looking at and wearing my designs and it brings them happiness like it does to me.

CULTURAL INFLUENCES… the edgy NYLON magazine, 1960’s shift dresses, minimalist movement.

I GOT WHERE I AM… because I worked hard and eventually found where I fit and what I like to do most. And because my family are always there to support me.

FASHION CAN SOMETIMES… be universal to different seasons. I want people to buy my designs and be able to wear them over and over no matter what season it is, and it still look beautiful and fashionable.

LOVE NOW BECAUSE… you can never love too much.

CREATIVITY COMES FROM… the world around us. I love to use what we have already got and capture it through photography and manipulate it into prints.

I HAVE NEVER… found it easy to make friends.

MY DREAMS ARE… realistic.

LONDON IS… a city of drama. It’s amazing how people dress, it’s like they are living in their own soap opera with costumes and everything.

I WOULDN’T PAY FOR… someone’s opinion. Everyone is different, just because one person doesn’t like it, others will.

MY GOAL… is to get the best mark I can for my degree and be positive about whatever comes my way.

I LIKE MAKING… a cup of tea for my friends to have a gossip.

Stunning prints on the simplest garments. This is exactly the look I love and want to achieve within my own work. I love how digital print can give the feeling of texture. The ruffles sketched on the dress is clever and looks really interesting and the animal skin and x-ray prints are different and subtle.

Another great location for a fashion photoshoot. I think black and white photography works really well with plain garments as it adds another depth to the image. I am a fan of monochrome tones but love to add colour with prints which obviously look better in colour to show off their full potential. This location is stunning and juxtaposes against the smooth fabrics.

I love the styling of this photograph. It reminds me of a horror film location, a secluded little cabin in the forrest. I think the black and white tones of this image work well to create the dark creepy atmosphere. There is a huge amount of texture from all the layers of fabrics and surrounding materials like the wooden cabin etc.

Brian Dettmer sifts through boxes of old book, cassettes and old maps to create incredible sculptures. This is only a tiny selection of his work, more can be seen through links from his website. I was stunned to see how creative he was with something we usually take for granted. His works really are something to be admired. I like that he has used old books rather than new ones to reveal the old colours, drawings, images and the lovely yellow colour the pages turn in their old age.

I found this on CHICMUSE and it is exactly what I love about photoshoots. I love the contrast between the perfect, exquisite clothes and the dirty location. I also like photoshoots in mansions and other beautiful locations if it fits with the style of the clothes but there is always something different about using a run down warehouse or shed that adds depth and interest to an image. This is something I am hoping to use in my final year project.
